Configuring node settings on site

Prev Next

This article explains how to configure a web proxy and a cellular APN on an Edge Node during onsite provisioning, and how to use the node's built-in diagnostics to confirm WAN connectivity before you leave the site.

These settings are configured in the node's local configuration interface, on the node itself. They are not configured from the Neeve Portal. Once configured, the node's proxy setting is visible in the portal under the node's Internet Connection tab.

When to use these settings

Use the onsite configuration interface when:

  • The node's WAN connection must traverse a customer web proxy before it can reach the Neeve Portal.
  • The node connects over cellular and the carrier requires a specific APN rather than the SIM's default.
  • The node is not reaching the portal after installation and you need to determine whether the problem is the local link, internet reachability, or the portal connection.

Configure a web proxy

  1. Connect to the node's local configuration interface.
  2. Navigate to the proxy configuration section.
  3. Enter the proxy host and the proxy port. The port must be between 1 and 65535. Values outside this range are rejected with an inline error and the configuration cannot be saved until corrected.
  4. Save the configuration.

To confirm the setting reached the portal, log in to Neeve, select Manage (gear icon) > Nodes, select the arrow icon (>) in the node's row, and open the Internet Connection tab. The Proxy configuration field shows the configured proxy.

Configure a cellular APN

For nodes connecting over mobile broadband, you can override the APN supplied by the SIM's carrier profile with one specified by the customer.

  1. Connect to the node's local configuration interface.
  2. Navigate to the APN configuration section.
  3. Enter the APN name supplied by the carrier or customer.
  4. Save the configuration.

An APN that has already been configured can be overwritten with a new value at any time by repeating these steps.

[!WARNING]
Known limitations

There is currently no option to remove an APN configuration once it has been saved. An APN can be changed but not unset.

The APN displayed in the node configuration interface is read from the SIM's carrier profile rather than the APN you configured. The configured APN is applied correctly to the connection; only the displayed value is incorrect. A fix is expected in a subsequent release. (NEEVEDEV-7134)

The APN name field accepts special characters that are not valid in an APN. Validation is not currently applied to this field. Enter the APN exactly as supplied by the carrier. (NEEVEDEV-7291)

Check cellular signal strength

For nodes with a cellular modem, the configuration interface displays a signal strength indicator showing the current bar level for the connected cellular network. Use this while positioning the node or antenna to find a location with adequate signal before completing installation.

Run node diagnostics

The diagnostics view tests the node's connectivity in stages, so you can identify where a connection is failing.

  1. Connect to the node's local configuration interface.
  2. Open the diagnostics view.
  3. Review the results for each test:
Test What it confirms
Internet connectivity The node can reach the public internet over its WAN connection
Neeve Portal connectivity The node can reach the Neeve Portal and register
Cellular status The cellular modem is connected and has an active data session

Interpreting results

  • Internet fails, cellular connected — the modem has a data session but traffic is not passing. Check the APN configuration.
  • Internet succeeds, portal fails — the node reaches the internet but not the portal. Check whether a proxy is required on this network and whether the proxy is configured correctly.
  • All tests succeed but the node shows as offline in the portal — allow a few minutes for the node to register, then check the node's status under Manage > Nodes.
